How to Elope on The Amalfi Coast

Are you looking to tie the knot on the breathtaking Amalfi Coast in Italy? Look no further! As a traveling elopement & wedding videographer, I have had the opportunity to film multiple elopements in different cities on the coast and can help YOU take the guesswork out of your planning! This beautiful stretch of coastline is located in the southwestern region of Italy known as Campania and is quite the popular destination for couples looking to exchange vows in an intimate setting. Whether you’re planning a traditional elopement with just the two of you or a small ceremony with a few close friends and family, the Amalfi Coast is the perfect place to celebrate your love for each other. Allow me to share a few of my own recommendations so that you can focus on your adventure rather than getting caught up in the stresses of planning!

PLAN YOUR TRAVEL:

First off, let’s talk about how to get there. The Amalfi Coast is located on the southern coast of Italy. The closest airport is Naples International Airport (NAP), which is about an hour drive from the Amalfi Coast. From the airport, you can either rent a car/taxi, take a train-bus transfer or hop on a ferry. I recommend having Euros on hand before you start your journey as many places do not take a credit card.

  • Car/Taxi (Most Expensive – Easiest): If you choose to rent a car or hire a taxi, be prepared for winding roads and narrow streets – it’s definitely not for the faint of heart! When I first traveled to the coast, I hired a driver through Sun Transfers and had them meet me outside of the airport with a sign that had my name on it. For me, this was a seamless process and the driver was extremely accommodating. Alternatively, there are many taxi services at the exit of NAP and most of the folks there spoke English, I found. You can expect this option to cost around €80-120 one-way.
  • Train-Ferry-Bus Transfer (Most Affordable – Less Convenient): Once you arrive in the airport you will be able to board a bus to either the train station or the port. Check out the following link for more info on the Airport Bus. The train station (Napoli Centrale) has small kiosks where you can purchase your ticket from Naples to Sorrento or Salerno (choose the city that is closest to your final destination). The cost can vary depending on if you choose a higher class or high speed train vs standard. Upon arrival to Sorrento or Salerno, you can purchase a bus voucher at any nearby tabacchi (similar to a bodega). The busses run in lines to and from cities and will stop along the way. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from the port in Naples to Sorrento and then from Sorrento to most of the coastal towns. This option is weather dependent. Your final and cheapest option is to take the bus the entire way. Again, this is not the most direct option, so will take approximately 125 minutes to reach places such as Positano. There are a variety of costs to consider here but you can expect these options to cost anywhere from €12-30 one-way.

CHOOSE YOUR ELOPEMENT LOCATION:

There are quite a few charming towns along the Amalfi Coast that would make a beautiful backdrop for your elopement. Some of my favorite towns include: Positano, Amalfi, or Atrani. Each place has its own unique character and appeal, so take some time to research and decide which one best fits your style and vision for your elopement. A few options are to exchange vows on the cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, on a boat with the colorful villas of Positano as your backdrop or on the quiet beach of Atrani with the stunning church Collegiate Santa Maria Maddalena behind you. If you prefer a more rustic setting, the delightful town of Ravello offers vast gardens and ancient ruins as the perfect setting for your ceremony. You may also consider a ceremony at one of the many Airbnb villas for the highest level of intimacy.

FIND A PLACE TO STAY:

The Amalfi Coast is known for its luxury accommodations, including hotels, villas, and bed and breakfasts. If you’re looking for something high-end, there are plenty of options to choose from. Consider a villa with a private pool and breathtaking views for the perfect ceremony location. For something a bit more affordable, there are also plenty of guesthouses and smaller hotels that offer charming and comfortable accommodations.

EXPLORE THE AREA:

The Amalfi Coast is full of breathtaking views and charming villages to explore. Take some time to wander the winding streets, visit the local markets and shops, and take in the stunning views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. You can also take a boat tour along the coast to see the beautiful beaches and hidden coves. After saying your “I do’s,” it’s time to explore and enjoy all that the Amalfi Coast has to offer. Go on a boat tour to see the coastline from a different perspective, or take a hike along the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) for breathtaking views. You can also visit the charming towns of Amalfi and Sorrento, both of which offer a mix of history, culture, and delicious cuisine.

DINE IN STYLE:

Speaking of delicious cuisine; the Amalfi Coast is known for its fresh seafood, pasta, local cheeses, lemons and wines. Whether you’re looking for a fancy restaurant or a casual trattoria, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from. Be sure to try some local specialties such as lemon pasta and seafood risotto.

The Amalfi Coast is a truly magical place to exchange vows, and I am confident that it will be an unforgettable experience for you and your partner.
